History

In the early 1990s, the maritime cargo transportation providers between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic did not offer a service geared towards fully satisfying the needs of the industry. Marine Express, Inc. was born to fulfill this task. With a vision of clients seeing us as part of their own operations, we committed ourselves to providing a dedicated service to surpass the speed of air freight with a 24-hour door-to-door delivery at a much lower price.

In 1991, Mr. Néstor González, with vast experience in air cargo transportation between both destinations, started with the idea of creating and developing an RO-RO maritime service that would innovate the industry. Thus began a service with the speed of an airline, but with much lower costs than what was offered by the shipping lines at that time, targeting companies and manufacturers that maintained very large inventories resulting in very high costs. By understanding the needs of the market and developing the only route with 24-hour delivery service in the history of the route, Mr. González and his team helped their clients save on storage and logistics costs, ensuring that plants would not stop due to cargo delays and/or infrequent trips.

By the end of 1992, everything was ready, and finally the service began with the first trip on January 14, 1993 from the port of Mayagüez, traveling practically empty, while acquiring the confidence of potential clients in an ideal service that seemed impossible at the time. Even without cargo, the ship departed and returned as planned, with an unprecedented frequency of three departures per week, in order to gain the client’s confidence in providing a reliable service.

Year after year, it broke its own statistics on the volume of transported cargo.

1996, Marine Express, Inc., as a promoter, began the organization and development of a cruise/ferry service between Mayagüez and Santo Domingo, to achieve the perfect combination of container transportation, passengers and passengers with vehicles, maintaining Marine Express, Inc. as the market leader and economically viable ferry service. It was finally achieved and service began on July 1, 1998. Through the years, our company has grown exponentially. Currently, our destination in Puerto Rico is San Juan, the capital city, keeping our promise of a permanent and reliable service of three departures per week, 24-hour door-to-door delivery and 12-hour port-to-port. Industries that depend on this route have been able to eliminate storage space, costs and logistical procedures, relying on the precision and commitment that has kept us as a leader in maritime transportation between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic for more than two decades. Larger and more efficient ships, in order to be able to increase the availability and variety of equipment, have been a constant demand that we have successfully met throughout all these years in order to expand the modes of transportation for different types of cargo according to the growth in market demands.
